"I think I could spend a lifetime
here walking around eighteen hours a day and talking to people and observing,
observing, observing - and barely skim the surface."

"One of the first things that really touched me here was meeting
so many people who have suffered so much and aren't bitter. In the States
people give up over smaller things, and here every day is hard issues and
survival. It takes a tremendous, tremendous amount of strength to live
here - and energy.
Capturing natural movements. Debbie Hill's photographs exude that
energy, and reflect her own focus on capturing the natural movements of
people. She hand colors her photos with oil paints, always leaving areas
black and white. The play between color and gray-tones gives the pictures
an internal contrast that feels both ancient and modern - like the places
she shoots. It is a somewhat surreal effect that forces the viewer to look
at even an everyday image anew. The work is powerful and radiates the artist’s
own fascination with her subject.
